Get ready to visit the Red Poppy Capitol of Texas during Georgetown’s annual Red Poppy Festival, where live music, a parade, a car show, art, food, and a 5k run fills the area around the historic town square.

If you’re new to Georgetown or haven’t attended the festival, here is everything you need to know about this family-friendly event.

Brief History of the Red Poppy Festival

The history of the red poppies in Georgetown traces back to a man known as “Okra.” Henry Purl Compton was his actual name. While fighting as an Army corporal in World War I, Okra is known to have delivered poppy seeds from Northern France to his mother in Georgetown.

According to legend, red poppies grew wild across the town shortly after Okra’s mother planted the seeds. Georgetown’s annual Poppy Festival includes a procession, arts and crafts stalls, and plenty of live music to commemorate this one-of-a-kind bloom.
